Tenuta di Trinoro 2022
ABOUT THE VINTAGE
Tenuta di Trinoro is the Trinoro estate’s Premier Vin.
Each year, it strives for the highest possible quality, drawing from the colour palate of four grape varieties and 50 distinctive vineyard parcels. There are no fixed recipes. No compromises. With every vintage, Tenuta di Trinoro finds a new, tailor-made expression of the richness, complexity, and elegance for which it is renowned.
THE VINTAGE AND THE VINEYARDS
The year 2022 presented itself as one of the driest in recent times, following the already arid and challenging 2021. However, our vines reduced their vigour to conserve energy, in memory of the previous year. Work in the vineyard was meticulous, particularly in managing the foliage – a necessary practice also for the selection of the bunches which followed. In fact, all vineyards were relieved of excess weight, not so much to seek concentration as to help the plant bring its few bunches to ripeness, given the scarce water resources. At a first glance picking seemed to be anticipated compared to previous harvests, but it then slowed down due to continuous rainfalls: the amount of water normally spread out over several months was concentrated in a few heavy downpours in September. The climate during the last ripening phase of the grapes distinctly influenced this vintage with vertical wines showing freshness and bold bouquets with crisp fruity notes. The Merlot was brought to the cellar at the end of September, followed by the Cabernet Franc. The later-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot reached an incredible maturity, surprisingly achieved already in early October. As always, picking was managed with a radical parcelization of our vineyards, bringing 50 separate parcels into the cellar – all hand harvested. Fermentation: In stainless steel tanks for 10-15 days at a controlled temperature. Ageing: 8 months in 225-liter barriques of various passages, followed by 12 months in concrete.
THE BLEND
Tenuta di Trinoro 2022 achieves its balance with a blend of 44% Cabernet Franc, 44% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 6% Petit Verdot. In recent years, climate change has made it challenging for Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot to fully ripen, and since 2015, these two varieties have not been chosen for our premier vin. Today, we are delighted to once again craft a Tenuta di Trinoro that unites all four grape varieties in a perfectly symmetrical blend.
A total of 8,483 bottles were bottled during the waning moon of early March 2024.
REVIEWS
Vinous, 96 points: “The 2022 Tenuta di Trinoro is a heady, opulent wine. Inky dark fruit, new leather, incense, licorice, espresso, bittersweet chocolate and cloves all stain the palate. Unctuous and flamboyant to the core, the 2022 is a total stunner. It can be enjoyed young, as the tannins are rather soft, but I would prefer to give it a few years in bottle to allow some of the baby fat to melt away. This is the first vintage since 2015 that includes all four red varieties on the estate: Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot.”
