Tenuta di Trinoro 2016
ABOUT THE VINTAGE
Tenuta di Trinoro is always comprised of the first selection of grapes, a vintage-specific blend of cabernet franc, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, and petit verdot grown on thin, hard, rocky soils rich in quartz and limestone, which tend to come from the higher parcels of the estate.
2016 was such an uncertain season, and yet the results are exceptional wines. The clue to this vintage was to recognize the long August’s burn, hidden behind the rains – at the season’s break, the storms were just revitalizing thirsty grapes. We welcomed the rain every time, instead of picking before it arrived: that was the way we brought in a great harvest. The merlot was picked in Cavalli Nord on September 27, while the cabernet franc from Camagi Nord and Sotto Cocceto was picked on October 10.
Nowhere is the style of the 2016 vintage clearer than in Tenuta di Trinoro. In this wine, I sought to express the lightness of the year by unifying two vats of merlot and two of cabernet franc in equal parts.
Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media, 100 points: “The 2016 Trinoro is one of the most extraordinary wines I have ever tasted from Trinoro and proprietor Andrea Franchetti. Deep and yet also silky, with exceptionally refined tannins and exquisite balance, the 2016 has so much to recommend it. Dark raspberry jam, white chocolate, mint and rose petal notes are all finely knit in this sublime, exquisitely beautiful wine. The finish alone boasts mind-bending intensity and persistence.”
Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 96 points: “Pure, ripe flavors of plum, blackberry and fruitcake are wrapped in toasty oak. This is dense, picking up earth and tobacco notes as the spice elements echo on the firm finish. The lasting impression is of saturated fruit. Everything is in proportion for a long life ahead.”
