Petit Sancaba 2023
Petit Sancaba is the second wine of the estate, made with grapes from the youngest pinot noir vineyard planted in 2019 and with second pick grapes from the remaining vineyards. Fermentation took place in a steel vat with 25% whole cluster grapes, without punch downs and only light pump overs aimed at keeping extraction at a minimum. The quick elevage of about 6 months took place in a steel vat. The result is a wine with low 12.5% abv, pale color, freshness, pronounced fruitiness, dynamic sip and great aromatic intensity, offering immediate enjoyment.
Only 1300 bottles produced.
2023 was a wet and damp vintage, one of the most complicated vintages out of the past decade with regards to the control of fungal disease, especially for those who like us conduct organic certified farming in the vineyard. Abundant rainfall lasted right up to early July and created the conditions for a strong presence of mildew in the vineyards that heavily compromised the crop of pinot noir, especially in the younger “Pianetto” vineyard used in the production of Petit Sancaba. As a result, only 1300 bottles were produced in 2023. On the other hand, the natural crop selection resulting from the mildew infection combined with the painstaking hand cleaning of clusters conducted in the vineyard by ourselves over the month of August, resulted in a very low yield harvest of few grapes but of great concentration and quality. The final result was a wine more concentrated in color and structure than usual.
