Contrada P 2022
ABOUT THE VINTAGE
Contrada Porcaria is a micro zone of a vast district located at about 650 meters above sea level, considered one of the most coveted terroir on Etna because of the particularly rich and luxurious wines it produces; it changes aromas continuously, and has an exotic body and an echo of burnt sugar. The land is composed of a thin layer of lava that crumbles under the feet. The vineyard of this Contrada covers 1.5 hectares.
As soon as the 2021 harvest was over at the end of October, we witnessed a torrential rain that caused a flood, especially in the Randazzo area. Between the end of November and the end of December we saw more rain in all our vineyards, cold temperatures and snow at altitudes of 1.200/1.500 meters a.s.l. A great start to winter that created good water reserves in the soil.
2022 started off with rather cold temperatures. Budbreak was regular, and the spring rains further replenished our water reserves. This fact, combined with the very warm temperatures in early summer, contributed to a rapid development of the canopy.
Porcaria, located at 650 meters/2,153 feet asl, is one of the vineyards that benefit from rain in August, althought it suffered because of hail damage. This is why we had to bring forward the harvest on October 1st bringing in grapes with an unusual ripeness.
REVIEWS
Vinous, 91-93 points: “Spicy and mineral in style, the 2022 Contrada Porcaria opens with a whiff of white smoke, blowing off to reveal dried strawberries and rubbed sage. It’s soft-textured with medium-bodied weight, offset by zesty acidity, crisp minerality and tart wild berry fruits. It finishes with a tart concentration and edgy tannins yet maintains fantastic freshness. Due to hail at the beginning of August, the 2022 was harvested ten days earlier than usual, with a 25% reduction in yields. Passopisciaro made sure to use all hand-sorting, berry by berry, and cut down on maceration times to ensure the quality of the wine.”
